Construction
Nationwide Platforms is supporting the 5-year transformation of Manchester Airport Terminal 2. It is a £1 billion project that includes:
A terminal extension
A new baggage hall
Parking facilities
Multiple piers
Nationwide Platforms is working with Select Plant Hire to provide a full powered access machine service for the project. As Laing O’Rourke’s chosen supplier, they handle everything. This includes choosing the right machines to managing and supporting them on site.
The biggest challenges in this project come from its massive scale and complexity. The build will use nearly 8,000 tonnes of steel and cover more than 86,000m². This is all while taking place within a live, operational airport.
At its peak, the site will have:
1,300 workers
Over 50 subcontractors across multiple trades
Up to 300 access platforms in use
Laing O’Rourke chose to work with Nationwide Platforms through a Partnered Managed Service. This is to maintain safety and productivity in such a demanding environment.
.
Nationwide Platforms and Select Plant Hire have an exclusive agreement with Laing O’Rourke. Together, they provide full powered access support for the entire project, including providing a range of machines, such as boom lifts and scissor lifts.
The service includes:
Project Management Team: A dedicated team manages all powered access. They choose the right machines, give advice, and oversee daily operations.
Monthly Review Meetings: Meetings to check progress, review performance, and plan improvements.
On-Site MEWP Compound: A special area on site is set up for machine prep, repairs, storage, and office space.
On-Site Engineer An engineer stays on site to keep all MEWPs running smoothly and fix any issues fast.
SkySentry™ Telematics: This system blocks unauthorised access to machines. It checks if operators are trained and is managed by the MEWP coordinator.
Machine Transport & Logistics: Deliveries are planned and managed. This is to avoid delays and save costs.
The Partnered Managed Service, delivered with Select Plant Hire, is designed to boost:
Customer service
Productivity
Safety
Cost-efficiency.
It has delivered real value to Laing O’Rourke throughout the Manchester Airport Terminal 2 project.
Key benefits include:
Fast response on-site: The Nationwide Platforms team responds quickly to any issues that could slow down work. They offer support and guidance right away.
Efficient repairs and replacements: If a machine breaks down or needs replacing, help is available right away. The on-site MEWP coordinator takes care of it quickly. This keeps the work going without delays.
Fewer MEWP deliveries: Over 1,000 MEWP deliveries were avoided during the 5-year project. This created significant savings and reduced site traffic.
Custom safety solutions BlueSky safety attachments were used throughout the project.
A custom fitting was developed in 10 weeks for a roofing subcontractor. This allowed them to lift large metal screens safely.
SkyRakEdge® was required for safely moving materials during scaffolding work.
Manchester Terminal 2 also hosted the world’s first trial of the award-winning SkySiren® PCS™ for scissor lifts.
Operators also benefited from VR safety training on site.
Total machine control with SkySentry™: All MEWPs were equipped with SkySentry™ telematics. This system stops unauthorised use and tracks how each machine is used. It gives the team full visibility, better safety, and more control over powered access machines during the build.
