Glasgow apprentice, Ryan Mackie, has been highly commended at the recent Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) Stars of the Future Awards in the Plant Technician of the Year category.

The 26 year old from Waterfoot just outside of Glasgow has been working as a service engineer for Nationwide Platforms, the UK’s leading provider of powered access hire for working at height, for almost four years.

Ryan was nominated by the National Construction College in Scotland, where he is completing his Level 3 in Plant Maintenance, alongside working at Nationwide Platforms’ Specialist Vehicles depot in Glasgow. The second phase of the competition involved Ryan submitting a video which was put to the CPA selection panel and then a panel of external judges.

CPA Stars of the Future is an awards scheme for apprentices and trainees in the construction plant sector, set up by the CPA over 10 years ago. The awards are intended to recognise and reward outstanding apprentices and trainees who not only bring ability and commitment to their learning and their work, but also possess those extra capabilities and attitudes which set them apart as being not only the foundations of the future of the industry, but also potentially its future leaders - the Stars of the Future.

Ian Brent, Quality and Technical Training Manager at Nationwide Platforms said “I've seen Ryan evolve as an apprentice throughout his time with us at Nationwide Platforms as part of our Specialist Vehicles Engineering Team. For him to be highly commended at the CPA Stars of The Future 2023, really is testament to the hard work he has put in throughout his apprenticeship.

“At NWP, we're committed to upskilling the future generation of engineers into our specialised industry and Ryan Mackie is just one of our 17 Engineering Apprentices based across our 31 depots and servicing our fleet of 14,000+ machines across the UK.”

Ryan added, “It’s fantastic to be recognised by the CPA and I’d like to extend my thanks to NCC Scotland College for the nomination and believing in my abilities. I am grateful for the opportunities they have provided and the guidance they have offered throughout my journey, alongside my colleagues and mentors at Nationwide Platforms, who have been a constant source of inspiration and motivation. Their support has played a crucial role in shaping my path and pushing me to exceed my own expectations.”
