IPAF MEWP Harness Course

The IPAF MEWP Harness Course is designed for Managers, Supervisors and Operatives who are required to select, inspect and use appropriate harness and lanyards for MEWP usage. The half day course can be delivered at our training centre or on site.

To instruct a user to select and use a harness and associated equipment safely when using a MEWP.

Introduction
Facilities, objectives, health & fitness statement.
Legislation, standards & guidance
HSWA 1974, MNSWR 1974, PUWER 1998, LOLER 1998, WAHR 2005, PPE 2002, CHSWR, CE markings, and how often should you inspect your harness.
Hierarchy of fall protection measures
Safe work at height, avoidance, work restraint, work position and fall arrest.
IPAF harness statement
Harness, lanyard and fittings
Harness types, lanyard types, fall factors, fixed vs adjustable, loop vs sliders, inertia devices, different connects, captive webbing.
Pre-use checks (includes a practical exercise)
How to do pre-use checks and fitting, and typical anchorage points.
Usage and anchor points
Typical anchorage points.
Storage and maintenance
Hazards and precautions
Rescue requirements and options
Theory test
Individual written tests with explanation of pass requirements.

Key learning objectives

By the end of the course delegates will be able to:
• Summarise the Work at Height Regulations and associated legislation and be fully aware of their legal responsibilities
• Select the correct work equipment and restraint systems to help prevent falls from height thus reducing risk to themselves and others
• Carry out inspections of equipment to ensure they are safe and fit for purpose
• Confidently select and don a harness correctly

This programme is designed for Managers, Supervisors and Operatives, who are required to select inspect and use appropriate harness and lanyards for MEWPs usage. The training methods involve a high proportion of discussion and group participation, supplemented with video and classroom based tutorials as well as practical exercises.
